Content: "In recent years, reports of "road rage," where aggressive or angry drivers exhibit dangerous behavior toward others on the road, have frequently made newspaper headlines. Extensive descriptive and experimental research studies have supported a reliable association between aggressive driving and increased risk of motor vehicle accidents. To the extent that aggressive driving increases this risk, it continues to pose a serious threat to public health. But what are the psychological mechanisms underlying such behavior? In this book, the authors explore this widespread but understudied phenomenon, including the etiology of driving anger and how it relates to more general findings on the interrelations of anger, hostility, and aggression. Road Rage provides an integrative summary of the existing literature on aggressive driving as well as detailed information on assessing aggressive drivers using such methods as standardized psychological tests, psychiatric diagnoses, and psychophysiological measurement. The authors also present comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for implementing successful and concise cognitive-behavioral treatment for angry, aggressive drivers. Clinical hints and vignettes are included to aid readers in implementing the treatment program, which has been successfully evaluated with both court- and self-referred individuals who acknowledge their hostile and perilous driving habits. This is one of the first books to examine the psychology of road rage, and clinicians and researchers alike will be rewarded with an increased understanding of the magnitude and treatment of this societal problem"--Jacket. Content: Involvement in motor vehicle accidents (MVA) is a widespread experience for Americans. Moreover, a large-scale survey has shown that MVAs are the most frequent trauma for American males and second most frequent trauma for American females. Another large-scale survey found that MVAs were the single leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the general population. Yet very little is known about the assessment and treatment of road crash survivors, and few studies have looked at the psychological and psychosocial effects of surviving an accident. This book describes the details of a 5-yr study of MVA survivors in the Albany, New York area and discusses MVA related PTSD. This volume will appeal to a broad audience of practitioners, researchers, and physicians; attorneys who handle MVA survivor cases; and those interested in public safety issues. Content: With the successful isolation of important behavior-health links and the resulting change in perspectives on the mind-body relationship, health psychology has emerged as an important and lively subdiscipline of clinical exploration and application. "Psychophysiological Disorders" responds to the recent demand for more clinically relevant materials by focusing on the assessment and treatment of some of the major psychophysiological disorders that have provided the traditional research interface between psychology and health. Leading psychologists and health practitioners explore the epidemiology and etiology, as well as the assessment and treatment, of several prevalent physical disorders and conditions, illustrating the vast potential for psychological intervention in [some] traditionally medical areas. /// The expert contributors provide thorough reviews of the research literature, advance many practical assessment and intervention suggestions, and offer a wealth of useful information and advice to practitioners who serve patients with psychophysiological disorders.
