Qu'elle reçut dans son appartement du 27 rue de Fleurus, à Paris, en compagnie d'Alice B. Toklas, tout le gotha de la littérature et de l'art contemporain, de Picasso à Hemingway, d'Ezra Pound à Fitzgerald, permettant entre autres l'éclosion du cubisme. On la dit excentrique, mystificatrice, tyrannique, on fit même d'elle une « Mère l'Oye de Montparnasse ». Raymond Queneau aimait à répéter qu'essayer de la comprendre n'était pas chose aisée, ajoutant : « La traduire encore moins, la présenter bien moins encore. » Philippe Blanchon la restitue à sa juste place : celle d'un écrivain unique impliqué avec énergie dans son siècle."
