Die Grenzziehung der jordanischen Ostgrenzen ist ein Beispiel für das Zusammentreffen tribaler und staatlicher Logik. Bei den Verhandlungen über die Grenzen in den Trockengebieten waren - wie auch sonst im Vorderen Orient - 3 Kriterien im Spiel: tribales Gewohnheitsrecht, islamisches und internationales Recht. Diese unterschiedlichen Kriterien verursachten Interpretations- und Anwendbarkeitsprobleme; Probleme, die durch Interessendivergenzen der betroffenen Parteien vergrößert wurden. Im Falle Jordaniens waren 4 Hauptakteure direkt involviert: Emir Abdallah von Transjordanien, Ibn Saud, Großbritannien und die Beduinenstämme, deren Wandergebiete und politische Untertänigkeit Grund teilweise heftiger Konflikte waren. Die Debatte um die "Nationalität" der Stämme zeigte die Grenzen eines politischen Projekts auf, das auf dem Modell des europäischen Staates basierte. (DÜI-Ott)
