Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf einer empirischen Teilstudie, die im Rahmen der Zweiten Heidelberger Hundertjährigen-Studie am Institut für Gerontologie Heidelberg unter der Leitung von Frau Prof. Dr. Daniela Jopp durchgeführt wurde. Geleitet wurde diese Arbeit von der ihr zugrundeliegenden Forschungsfrage, wie Hundertjährige mit dem relativ nahen Lebensende umgehen und welchen Einfluss das Bewusstsein der Endlichkeit des Lebens bei ihnen auf den Lebenswillen hat. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen und mit den Hundertjährigen über den Tod, das Sterben und die zeitliche Begrenztheit des Lebens ins Gespräch zu kommen, wurden die sogenannten Lebensendefragen in das Erhebungsinstrument aufgenommen. Es wurden 87 Interviews mit Hundertjährigen ausgewertet. Aus der Analyse der qualitativen Daten konnten 8 Hauptkategorien sichtbar gemacht werden, die gewissermaßen die zentralen Beschäftigungsthemen der Menschen mit hundert Jahren angesichts der Todesnähe darstellen. Die Ausführungen der Hundertjährigen über den Umgang mit der Endlichkeit lassen folgende Interpretationen zu: Der Lebenswille der Betroffenen ist auch in diesem höchsten Alter trotz der Todesnähe stark; sie empfinden die verbleibende Lebenszeit nicht als komprimiert und sind weiterhin bereit, die sich ihnen stellenden Entwicklungsaufgaben anzunehmen; sie schaffen es, sich selbst immer wieder mit den ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden Kompetenzen in ihrer eigenen Form der Selbsttranszendierung neu auf neue Lebenssituationen einzustellen; sie brauchen und suchen die soziale Teilhabe, möchten aber auch im generativen und kommunikativen Sinn ihr Lebensumfeld an ihrem Leben teilhaben lassen. Der soziale Aspekt, die Einbindung also in ein vielgestaltiges Lebensumfeld, spielt eine entscheidende Rolle für die Probanden im gelingenden Umgang mit dem Tod und dem Sterben und zeigt die Bedeutsamkeit der Teilhabe und Teilgabe der Hundertjährigen im kommunikativen Wechselspiel mit der Umwelt zur Erhaltung und Stärkung ihres Lebenswillens.
