Unsere Beziehung zur Umwelt ist heute mehr denn je zuvor in einer kritischen, ja entscheidenden Phase. Alle unsere Kräfte sind notwendig, um einen Ausweg zu finden. Die Zukunft und die Überlebensfähigkeit des Menschen hängen davon ab, wie ernst die Umweltnaturwissenschaften genommen werden. Die sich in diesem Zusammenhang stellenden Fragen sind extrem interdisziplinär, und in der Tat alle Aspekte der Naturwissenschaften kommen hier zusammen. Entsprechend wird vom Umweltwissenschaftler erwartet, daß er sich in allen Disziplinen gleichermaßen gut auskennt. Eine außerordentliche Herausforderung und anspruchsvolle Aufgabe! Gerade die Physik ist in dieser Fragestellung als Grundlagenwissenschaft mit direktem Praxisbezug sehr wesentlich. Dieses Lehrbuch verdeutlicht die Notwendigkeit, physikalische Gesichtspunkte zum Verständnis der Prozesse in der Natur heranzuzziehen. Es wählt einen glücklichen Mittelweg zwischen der Vermittlung von grundlegenden Prinzipien und deren Anwendung auf wichtige Problemstellungen in den Umweltwissenschaften. Es ergänzt somit einerseits Lehrbücher der reinen Physik, die sich auf die zeitlosen Grundlagen konzentrieren, und andererseits Monographien, die spezielle Fragestellungen im Zusammenhang mit aktuellen Umweltproblemen behandeln. "Physik und Umwelt" bildet somit eine Brücke zwischen diesen zwei Polen und hilft dem Studenten, den Weg von den Grundlagen zur praktischen Umweltwissenschaft zu finden. Ich hoffe, daß dieses Buch mithilft, eine neue Generation von kompetenten und motivierten Umweltwissenschaftlern heranzubilden, die nicht nur befähigt sind, Mißstände in unserem Umweltverhalten zu konstatieren und zu kritisieren, sondern auch aktiv und kreativ mithelfen, ein Weiterleben auf unserer Erde auf lange Zeit zu garantieren.
