Als Gegenpol zu den aktuell geführten pädagogischen und bildungspolitischen Debatten zur Interkulturalität wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit ein Ansatz dargestellt, der über die in den Vordergrund getretenen soziologischen und migrationspolitischen Teilaspekte hinausgeht und der eine Rückkehr zu den anthropologischen Grundlagen Interkultureller Pädagogik fordert. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die These, dass die zentralen Begriffe der Interkulturellen Pädagogik, Begriffe wie Kultur, Ethnie oder Nation, in deren traditionellem Verständnis zu einem Denken in kollektiven Kategorien, zu einem Denken in In-Gruppen und Out-Gruppen verleiten. Interkulturelles Lernen findet jedoch primär nicht zwischen Gruppen, auch nicht zwischen Kulturen oder Vertretern der Kulturen, sondern zwischen Individuen statt. Demzufolge wird ein neuer theoretischer Ansatz für die Interkulturelle Pädagogik erarbeitet: ein Ansatz, der statt von kollektiven Kategorien vom Individuum ausgeht und der die Prozesse individuellen Lernens betrachtend sich dem Problem des Umgangs mit sprachlichen, ethnischen, nationalen und kulturellen Differenzen nähert.
