Lacey Flint befindet sich wegen ihrer Traumatisierung (vgl. "Dead End", ID-A 23/13) noch im Sonderurlaub. Da wird unmittelbar in ihrer Umgebung ein Serientäter aktiv, der Jungen im vorpubertären Alter entführt, ihnen die Kehlen durchschneidet, sie ausbluten lässt und dann am Themseufer ablegt. Barney, der 11-jährige Sohn von Laceys Nachbar, einem verwitweten Literaturprofessor, dessen Frau Selbstmord begangen hat, beginnt ebenfalls, sich für die Morde zu interessieren und seine eigenen Schlüsse zu ziehen. Ein Internetblog und ein Psychologie-Professor heizen die Stimmung in der Öffentlichkeit zusätzlich an. Als Barneys Clique eine der Leichen findet und der Sohn ihres Kollegen Mark Joesbury ebenfalls entführt wird, kann Lacey sich nicht länger aus dem Fall heraushalten. Die vielen Handlungsfäden mit Rückgriffen auf den Vorgänger und die eingehenden Psychogramme der Protagonisten mit ihren Eigenheiten und Geheimnissen gehen allerdings zu Lasten der Spannung. Anders als die Vorgänger liest sich dieser - bis auf den wirklich spannenden und originellen Plot - recht zäh. Empfohlen mit Einschränkungen.
