Dennoch fehlt es ihnen an Kontur, Plastizität, Prägnanz. Sie wirken eher wie die Ausführenden langer bis länglicher Gedankenspiele vor und in den nach ewigem Regen riechenden walisischen Häusern... Am Ende stellt sich dieser manchmal wohliges Frösteln erzeugende Roman als Geschichte von Leuten heraus, die aus der Enge von Herkunft, Heimat und gesellschaftlicher Rolle aufbrechen wollen, aus ihrer alten Haut fahren möchten und doch nicht wirklich vom Fleck kommen.
