"Prijswinnend historicus Bart van der Boom reconstrueert het perspectief van de Joodse Raad, in een poging te begrijpen hoe goede bedoelingen de weg naar de ondergang hebben geplaveid. De Nederlandse Joden werden tijdens de Duitse bezetting geïsoleerd van de rest van de maatschappij, in een getto zonder muren. Dat getto werd bestuurd door de Joodse Raad, die consequent pleitte voor gehoorzaamheid aan Duitse bevelen, ook toen in juli 1942 de deportaties begonnen. De Joden die voor de Joodse Raad werkten werden vrijgesteld van deportatie, totdat in de zomer van 1943 ook zij werden afgevoerd. Het beleid van de Joodse Raad pakte dus desastreus uit, en na de oorlog had niemand er nog een goed woord voor over. 'Joodse Raad' staat tegenwoordig voor het ergste soort verraad - verraad van de 'eigen' mensen, in een laffe poging zelf buiten schot te blijven. Dat oordeel is begrijpelijk, maar niet verhelderend. Tijdens de oorlog konden velen het beleid van de Joodse Raad billijken als de enige mogelijkheid om te redden wat er te redden viel. Vooraanstaande Joodse bestuurders verleenden er hun medewerking aan, ook toen daar nog geen enkel voordeel aan verbonden was. Blijkbaar zagen zij iets wat wij niet zien en andersom"--
