Der vorliegende Band enthält erstmals alle Gedichte Wezels, zum Teil in Erstdrucken nach Handschriften. Bei den meisten handelt es sich um Jugend- oder um Alterswerke, die einen neuen Einblick in Wezels Entwicklung als Autor geben. Dazu kommt mit Prinz Edmund ein in der deutschen Literatur seltenes Beispiel eines komischen Versepos, das mit der Darstellung von priesterlichem Missbrauch, der Auseinandersetzung mit sadistisch geprägter Sexualität und der Kritik an der Charakterschwäche des herrschenden Adels kaum zeitgemäßer sein könnte. Den wesentlichen Teil des Bandes nimmt Wezels Briefroman Wilhelmine Arend, oder die Gefahren der Empfindsamkeit ein. Wezel wählt hier eine weibliche Hauptfigur, die unter privaten und gesellschaftlichen Problemen leidet, welche in Verbindung mit ihrer Konstitution zu psychischen Krankeitssymptomen führen
