Das Buch liefert anhand der Bestände des Frankfurter Städel Museums einen guten Überblick über die Entwicklung der Kunstgeschichte von Anfang des 19. bis in die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Rund 300 Bilder werden dazu präsentiert und fachkundig analysiert.

Unter den deutschen Museumsmanagern gilt Max Hollein als Ausnahmeerscheinung. Das Frankfurter Städel Museum wurde unter seiner Führung zu einem viel beachteten Flaggschiff - nicht nur in der deutschen Museumslandschaft. Bevor er seinen Schreibtisch verlässt und in die USA geht, hat er 3 Prachtbände publiziert: 2011 einen Band "Alte Meister" (1300 bis 1800; hier nicht besprochen), einen über die Gegenwartskunst (1945 bis heute; ID-B 35/16)) und einen über die Kunst der Moderne, die den Zeitraum von 1800 bis 1945 abdeckt. Dieser Band ist (wie die anderen) ein üppig gestaltetes und gedrucktes Coffee-Table-Book, das sich aus den Sammlungsbeständen des Museums speist. Es ist aber auch ein anschauliches Lehrwerk der Kunstgeschichte. Texte zu Epochen und zu den einzelnen Bildern liefern wichtige Hintergrundinformationen. Alles ohne sprachliche Verbiegungen, gut zu lesen und äußerst informativ. Letztendlich ist es ein Beleg für die seit Generationen geleistete Museumsarbeit, vor der Hollein sich verbeugt: Hier lässt sich Kunstgeschichte lückenlos und an herausragenden Exponaten erzählen.
