Der 1621 geborene LaFontaine, der "König der Verse", errang Weltruhm durch seine Fabeln für die er sich u.a. von Äsop inspirieren ließ. Charakteristisch ist die straffe, auf eine Pointe zuarbeitende Handlung und eine deutlich akzentuierte Moral. "Netze, noch so fein gesponnen/ fangen den oft, der sie spann;/ Untreu, noch so fein ersonnen/ schlägt gar oft den eigenen Mann", heißt es etwa als Quintessenz der Fabel von Frosch und Maus. Fabelanthologien oder Auswahlbände LaFontaine'scher Fabeln (z.B. "Fabeln"; BA 1/96) dürften in jeder Bücherei vorhanden sein. Diese Gesamtausgabe der 12 Fabelbände von LaFontaine ist etwas Besonderes, ein Bonbon für finanzstarke Büchereien: vorzüglich übersetzt von E. Dohm und hinweisend illustriert von dem gebürtigen Tschechen A. Born, einem herausragenden Künstler, der die Aussage der Texte, Mimik und Körpersprache ironisch überzeichnend, faszinierend nachstellt. Trotz der reichen Bebilderung sollte der gewichtige Band eher im Erwachsenenbestand seinen Platz finden, zumal die späteren, von Zeitkritik geprägten Fabeln Kinder überfordern. Sehr empfohlen.
