Note:
Während seit mehr als 2000 Jahren zum Stoffaustausch zwischen aufsteigenden Dämpfen und herablaufender Flüssigkeit zunächst vor allem Rieselkolonnen herangezogen wurden, benutzt man heute hierfür bevorzugt die viel jüngeren Boden- und Füllkörpersäulen, die beide erst im Verlaufe des 19. Jahrhunderts geboren wurden. Die Bodenkolonnen gehen auf CELLIER-BLUMENTHAL zurück, der sie bereits zu Beginn des vorigen Jahrhunderts zu hoher Vollkommenheit entwickelte. In der Folgezeit wurde dieser Kolonnentyp nicht nur apparativ verbessert, sondern gleichzeitig wurden auch die Grundlagen seiner Arbeitsweise sowohl experimentell als auch vom theoretischen Standpunkt aus im Hinblick auf die Art des Stoffaustausches eingehend untersucht. Hiervon zeugen neben einer Fülle von Zeitschriftenveröffentlichungen und Patentschriften zahlreiche zusammenfassende Darstellungen in Buchform. Ganz anders liegen die Verhältnisse für Füllkörperkolonnen. Säulen mit Schüttfüllungen wurden in die Technik durch ILGES 1873 eingeführt. Gegenüber Bodenkolonnen konnten sie sich erst behaupten, nachdem sich RASCHIG durch die Entlassung eines Chemikers veranlaßt fühlte, das Geheimnis seines Erfolges mit dem von ihm entdeckten und seither nach ihm benannten Raschig-Ring zu veröffentlichen. Rückblickend ist es interessant, daß die technische Füllkörpersäule auf dem Gebiet, für das sie ihr Erfinder IWEs benutzte - nämlich dem der kontinuierlichen Trennung engsiedender Gemische - auch heute noch nur ungern Verwendung findet. Der Grund liegt in ihrer durch den geringen Arbeitsinhalt bedingten Neigung zur Instabilität. Das Verdienst RASCHIGS besteht nicht nur in der Erfindung der nach ihm benannten Ringe, sondern liegt vor allem in der weisen Beschränkung der mit ihnen durchgeführten Aufgaben
