Der kleine namenlose Erzähler des Debütromans hat Eltern, die sich in mehr als einer Beziehung ungewöhnlich verhalten. Sie tanzen nur zu "Mr. Bojangles", gesungen von Nina Simone, die Mutter siezt ihren Sohn, der sie anhimmelt. Als es mit einer Lehrerin Probleme gibt, nehmen die Eltern das Kind kurzerhand von der Schule. Dass mit der Mutter etwas nicht stimmen könnte, sie womöglich manisch-depressiv und alkoholkrank ist, kann der junge Erzähler nicht erkennen. Eines Tages steckt sie jedoch die Wohnung in Brand und wird eingewiesen. Das verrückt-schöne Leben der Familie ist damit zu Ende. Vater und Sohn entführen die Mutter zwar noch aus der Psychiatrie, doch sie nimmt sich das Leben. "Warten auf Bojangles" war ein Überraschungsbestseller in Frankreich und gewann mehrere Literaturpreise. Abwechselnd aus der Sicht des Sohnes und des Vaters beschreibt der Autor die große Liebe zwischen dem Paar. Ein schöner und trauriger Roman zugleich, der trotz des tragischen Endes Lebenslust ausstrahlt und sich aufgrund der Kürze gut in einem Rutsch durchlesen lässt. Empfehlenswert, auch als Hörbuch (ID-A 14/17).
