Brüser zeichnet aber auch ein verändertes Bild von Johann Sebastian Bach selbst. Frei von theologischer Indienstnahme zeigt er ihn als Musiker und Komponisten in seinem persönlichen, ja privaten Handeln, in seinen Emotionen, seinem Reichtum an Phantasie, seinem Traditionsbewusstsein und nicht zuletzt in seinem Selbstverständnis als Musiker.
