In den modernen Industrienationen sterben jährlich mehr Menschen durch Suizid als infolge von schweren Verkehrsunfällen; insbesondere bei älteren Personen ist eine deutliche Zunahme suizidalen Verhaltens zu beobachten. Konzentrierte sich früher die theologisch-ethische Auseinandersetzung mit der Suizidproblematik auf die normative Beurteilung der Selbsttötung und Diskussionen um das Verfügungsrecht des Menschen über sein Leben, so rückt gegenwärtig die gewachsene Einsicht in die pathologischen und tragischen Dimensionen des Suizidphänomens mehr und mehr die moralische Verpflichtung zu mitmenschlicher Solidarität und wirksamer suizidprophylaxe ins Blickfeld. Entsprechend ihrer integrierenden Funktion hat sich eine christliche Moral in diesem Zusammenhang zunächst um ein differenziertes Wissen über di Äthiologie suizidalen Verhaltens zu bemühen, wobei sie von der neueren Suizidforschung insbesondere auf die Tragweite der Emotion Ärger und der Kognition Hoffnungslosigkeit aufmerksam gemacht wird.Unbedingt kritisch zu bewerten ist vor diesem Hintergrund und unter Berücksichtigung der prosozialen Perspektive des christlichen Menschenbildes das Engagement sog. "Right-to-die-Societies", welche längst nicht nur schwerstkranke Personen bei der Durchsetzung ihrer Sterbewürde unterstützen oder sogar Beihilfe zum Suizid praktizieren. Nicht in der organisierten Geschäftigkeit eines assistierten Suizids die bedrängenden Lebensprobleme der Mitmenschen schnell und effektiv aus der Welt zu schaffen, kann der Schlüssel zu echter Humanität liegen. Aus Sicht einer christlichen Ethik muss es vielmehr um Impulse für eine neue Kultur des menschlichen Lebens im Bereich der Suizidprävention gehen, die sich vor allem auf die Brennpunkte "Lebensbeziehungenstärken" und "Hoffnungsperspektiven eröffnen" konzentrieren.
