Content: Rezension(1): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: August 15, 2021 What if Rapunzel's mother drank a potion from the wrong flower? The Twisted Tales this time revisit the tale of Rapunzel--specifically, Disney's animated feature Tangled with elements from the TV spinoff included. In this version, a peasant brings a different sort of flower to save the ailing, pregnant queen: the Moondrop flower as opposed to the traditional Sundrop, which has magical, healing properties. The mix-up changes things a little bit: Rapunzel grows long, silver hair that imbues her with the power to kill, rather than heal. For the safety of the kingdom, little Rapunzel is tucked away in her tower and watched over by the duplicitous Mother Gothel. Of course, Rapunzel yearns for freedom and finds it in escaping her tower and traveling the countryside with handsome rogue Flynn Rider and a young woman named Gina. The trio investigates the secrets of Rapunzel's magical hair while Gothel and other villainous characters hunt them down. The action is crisp, and the characters are well rendered, one small drawback is the book's inability to break free of Tangled's (admittedly airtight) structure despite the series' promise of twists. Regardless, the read remains compelling, and the author effectively captures the balance of enthusiasm and longing that makes Rapunzel such a beloved Disney princess. Die-hard fans will thrill, and, at the end of the day, that's what really matters. Main characters read as White. An engaging redressing of a near bulletproof tale. (Fantasy. 12-16) COPYRIGHT(2021) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: February 1, 2022Gr 6 Up- The 12th book in the A Twisted Tale series asks: If Rapunzel's mother accidentally drank a potion from the Moondrop flower instead of the Sundrop, how would Tangled have gone? Rapunzel grows long silver hair and develops powers that hurt rather than heal. To protect the kingdom, she's locked away in a tower under the care of Mother Gothel. When Rapunzel finally escapes the tower, she runs into Flynn Rider and a woman named Gina, and together they investigate Rapunzel's mysterious hair while running from Mother Gothel. The book takes on Tangled 's tight pacing and action sequences, which isn't as twisty as the series name implies, but ultimately provides a fun time for fans. Characters cued white. VERDICT A fun, if not particularly standout, reimagining of a beloved story. Copyright 2022 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "

Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: July 15, 2015 In a Disney-authorized riff on the animated film Aladdin, one crucial plot twist has horrifying results. The first quarter of the book serves up a straightforward novelization of the film, until evil vizier Jafar traps the roguish protagonist underground-in this version, without the magical lamp. Aladdin escapes to find that with the genie's aid, Jafar has publicly murdered the feckless sultan, imprisoned the princess Jasmine, and terrorized the people of Agrabah into submission. Fortunately, Aladdin can call upon the Street Rats to spearhead a revolution, but can a gang of petty thieves prevail over Jafar's black magic? Briskly paced, with nonstop action and clever allusions to classic horror tales, this retelling suffers from paper-thin characterization and abrupt shifts in tone, from saccharine romance to snarky quips to grisly horror, including the tortures and deaths of more than one beloved movie character. The setting and dialogue are rife with jarring anachronisms, and even when some characters are granted added depth-as in the genie's tragic back story and Jafar's terrifying descent into madness-it often backfires, for instance conflicting creepily with the former's jocular wisecracks and latter's cartoonish villainy. Despite a tacked-on happily-ever-after epilogue, the darkness and violence, culminating in a rebel victory that is at best ambiguous, leave a bitter aftertaste. Competent enough as fan fiction, but strictly for (not-too-devoted) fans of the movie. (Fantasy. 13-18) COPYRIGHT(2015) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: October 1, 2015Gr 7 Up- The first quarter of this work functions as a novelization of the Disney movie that inspired it, detailing the escapades of young street urchin Aladdin as he steals to survive. After Aladdin encounters the princess Jasmine at the city market, the villainous Jafar, the childlike sultan's grand vizier, uses Aladdin to retrieve a magic lamp from the Cave of Wonders. It is here that the story deviates from Disney, as this time around it is Jafar who claims possession of the lamp and uses the genie inside to murder the sultan and take his throne. Upon escaping from the Cave of Wonders, Aladdin teams up with Jasmine and a band of thieving street rats to stop the evil sorcerer and reclaim the city of Agrabah. The action-packed story maintains a brisk pace, but the characters lack depth and complexity, and though Braswell succeeds in creating a darker tone, she is less successful in her efforts to ground Jasmine and Aladdin's revolution in Agrabah's economic inequities. Furthermore, the novel is a bit heavy-handed thematically, and anachronistic word choices and dialogue have a tendency to pull readers from what is otherwise an interesting, if simplistic, setting. VERDICT An additional purchase where there is an enthusiastic audience for retellings.- Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elementary School, Abington School District, PACopyright 2015 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. But what if Ariel never married Eric or defeated Ursula? In this twisted tale, Braswell has taken the beloved characters and written a what-if story that takes wild turns. A wiser Ariel returns to life in Atlantica alone under the sea with her sisters and sea creature friends-Scuttle, Flounder, Sebastian, and Threll. Prince Eric is now married to Ursula, the sea witch disguised as princess Vanessa using Ariel's voice. Ariel's father, King Triton, is being held captive by the demonic sea witch, and now it's up to the little mermaid to rescue him and get revenge and her lost love. An underwater sea battle ensues. Braswell has written an action-packed read that teens will not be able to put down. Fans of the previous twisted Disney tales will devour this captivating installment full of humor. VERDICT Purchase where retellings and mermaid fantasies are popular.- Annisha Jeffries, Cleveland Public LibraryCopyright 2018 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: July 15, 2018 Braswell (Once upon a Dream, 2016, etc.) picks up this epic fairy tale five years after Ariel and Eric lose to Ursula. Imagine that Eric and Vanessa do get married: Ursula's nautilus shell necklace never breaks, freeing Ariel's voice, and since she cannot sing, Eric remains entranced by Vanessa. King Triton steps in for his daughter and becomes Ursula's prisoner. Ariel returns, mute, to Atlantica to rule in his stead, believing her father to be dead. When Scuttle the sea gull gets a lead that King Triton is alive, Ariel returns to the surface in hopes of finding her father and restoring him to the throne. Nothing goes to plan, but with the help of her friends she attempts to put an end to Ursula's evil plans. Ariel and Eric are still ridiculously moony-eyed over one another, and some details are somewhat far-fetched even for a fairy tale, but lyrical nods to the music in the movie as well as quippy dialogue (and the nostalgia factor) make this a magical read. The characters are fleshed out with more background, showing how their experiences have shaped them. With one minor exception, all characters are assumed white. A fun, quick read that returns Disney fans to a world of characters they love. (Fiction. 13-18) COPYRIGHT(2018) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

Content: "What if the sleeping beauty never woke up? Once Upon a Dream marks the second book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. It should be simple—a dragon defeated, a slumbering princess in a castle, a prince poised to wake her. But when the prince falls asleep as his lips touch the fair maiden's, it is clear that this fairy tale is far from over. With a desperate fairy's last curse controlling her mind, Princess Aurora must escape from a different castle of thorns and navigate a dangerously magical landscape—created from her very own dreams. Aurora isn't alone—a charming prince is eager to join her quest, and old friends offer their help. But as Maleficent's agents follow her every move, Aurora struggles to discover who her true allies are and, moreover, who she truly is. Time is running out. Will the sleeping beauty be able to wake herself up?"
Content: Rezension(1): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: February 15, 2016 What if Disney's Sleeping Beauty never woke up? Princess Aurora endures endless days of useless boredom in the surreal, post-apocalyptic confines of Thorn Castle, whose shellshocked inhabitants survive only due to gracious Queen Maleficent's powers. Slowly the princess realizes that she is trapped within her own dreams, an alternate reality horribly twisted by the evil fairy after her dragon form wasn't completely slain. Familiar characters from the film (and some intriguing new ones) help Aurora in her struggles to awaken and save her kingdom, but her greatest enemy is her own overwhelming despair. Greatly improving upon A Whole New World (2015), the first in the Disney-authorized series, this story starts after the movie's end, fleshing out its tissue-thin archetypes into likable (if fallible) personalities: the fairies become more otherworldly, the villain more magnificently evil, and the prince downright endearing in his unflagging cheerfulness and dogged devotion. Since nearly the entire narrative occurs in Aurora's subconscious, her character is the most deeply explored--in a daringly faithful depiction of chronic depression, with all the loneliness, listlessness, and self-loathing that entails. Hundreds of pages of Aurora's pain and passive futility may be even harder to read than the brief, grisly interludes of Maleficent's viciousness, but the dreary slog is redeemed once the princess finally reclaims the intelligence, courage, and compassion that are her true birthright. A surprising and clever twist on a beloved tale. (Fantasy. 13-18) COPYRIGHT(2016) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: January 1, 2016Gr 7 Up- What if Sleeping Beauty never woke up? This work asks readers to rethink the classic Disney version. Prince Phillip throws his sword at the dragon version of Maleficent, but when he approaches the sleeping Princess Aurora and kisses her lips, he, too, succumbs to the sleeping curse. Meanwhile, Aurora is alive and living a normal life, or so she believes. Maleficent rescues the kingdom and princess from her neglectful parents, taking the crown for herself. When Aurora overhears a confession of truth from Maleficent, her world begins to crumble. She has been asleep this entire time. The world she thought was real has been a construct of her dreams. Her escape from the evil fairy's grasp leads her to Prince Phillip, who, in her dream world, becomes one of her few allies in her attempt to finally defeat Maleficent. The princess is the ultimate hero of her own fate. She is a strong, intelligent young woman who struggles to find and trust her own skills. Switching between the real and the dream worlds may confuse readers at first, but those who stick with the jumping narration will be rewarded with a fun, fast-paced adventure. Readers' possible confusion mimics Aurora's own grappling with reality vs. her dreams. Aurora finds her voice and becomes the queen she was born to be. Content: " What if Wonderland was in peril and Alice was very, very late? Alice is different than other eighteen-year-old ladies in Kexford, which is perfectly fine with her. She'd rather spend golden afternoons with her trusty camera or in her aunt Vivian's lively salon, ignoring her sister's wishes that she stop all that nonsense and become a respectable member of society. Alice is happy to meander to Miss. Yao's teashop or to visit the children playing in the Square. She's also interested in learning more about the young lawyer she met there, but just because she's curious, of course, not because he was sweet and charming. But when Alice develops photographs she has recently taken about town, familiar faces of old suddenly appear in the place of her actual subjects-the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar. There's something eerily off about them, even for Wonderland creatures. And as Alice develops a self-portrait, she finds the most disturbing image of all-a badly-injured dark-haired girl asking for Alice's help.Mary Ann. Returning to the place of nonsense from her childhood, Alice finds herself on a mission to stop the Queen of Hearts' tyrannical rule and to find her place in both worlds. But will she able to do so . before the End of Time? "

Alice is now 18, an adventurous and aspiring photographer. As she takes her photos, some familiar Wonderland faces appear, old friends beckoning her to help them. Alice must navigate both family drama and a burning desire to return to Wonderland through her sister's annoying desires for marriage and expectations to become a proper lady in society. Along the way, Alice meets a misunderstood young lawyer, who is outside the proper social circle, just as she is. This book hits on racial and social injustice in 19th-century England, allowing Alice, who is white, and readers to explore the subjective reality of right and wrong. Through trials and tears, Alice finds herself in and out of Wonderland, trying to save her friends from the Queen of Hearts. The Queen has one objective-to win, whatever the cost. Even though the original story is twisted and strange, this retelling is dark, grim, and grotesque at times. Wonderland isn't tea parties and delicious tiny cakes, but scary and dangerous. It'll take a unique reader and true Alice fan to appreciate this almost horrorlike adaptation. VERDICT A strange reimagining of Wonderland for dark fantasy and horror fans.- Paige Kostelyk, DeMotte Christian Grade School, INCopyright 2020 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "
