Eine Biographie über Sophie Louisa Kwaak und die Finanzierung des Instituts für Sozialforschung. Die Landarbeitertochter Sophie Louisa Kwaak wuchs in einer kinderreichen Familie auf. Nach dem Tod des Vaters zog sie mit ihrer Mutter nach Den Haag. Kwaak, die zeit ihres Lebens Fietje genannt wurde, entkam den beengten häuslichen Verhältnissen durch ihre Ausbildung zur Stenotypistin in Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch. 1933 wurde sie Verwaltungssekretärin der Rotterdamer Investment- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft »Robema«, die das Vermögen der jüdischen Familie Weil vor den Nationalsozialisten retten sollte. Mithilfe des Kapitals des Getreidehändlers Hermann Weil war 1923 unter anderem das Institut für Sozialforschung an der Frankfurter Universität gegründet worden, das anfangs unter dem Namen Hermann-Weil-Stiftung firmierte. Die Biographie von Fietje Kwaak ist somit auch ein Beitrag zur Wirtschaftsgeschichte der Frankfurter Schule. Kwaak, die dem Unternehmen »Robema« bis 1964 verbunden blieb, widerstand als Prokuristin und stellvertretende Direktorin intelligent und mutig der Konfrontation mit den deutschen Besatzern während des Zweiten Weltkriegs.
