Seinen "Versuch" gibt Itard, trotz anfänglicher Erfolge ("Victor" lernt einige Worte sprechen und schreiben), schließlich verbittert auf. Gernstein (vgl. sein Bilderbuch "Der wilde Junge", in dieser Nr.), der die Quellen genau kennt, präsentiert eine dramatische, aus unterschiedlicher Perspektive erzählte (und hervorragend übersetzte) Geschichte, die äußerst differenziert seine Protagonisten und nuanciert die Zeit der Aufklärung beleuchtet. Ein außergewöhnliches Jugendbuch, auch für Erwachsene.
