Bei Schöningen in Niedersachsen entdeckte ein Archäologe eine Weltsensation: acht gut erhaltene, rund 400.000 Jahre alte Holzspeere - die ältesten Speere der Menschheit in einem Jagdlager, das mit zu den frühesten Besiedlungsspuren in Europa zählt. Das im Braunkohlentagebau Schöningen in etwa 10 Metern Tiefe seit 1994 ausgegrabene Jagdlager erwies sich als Fund von Weltrang: Die steinzeitlichen Jäger hatten an einem Seeufer Jagd auf eine Herde von Wildpferden gemacht - und uns die ältesten Holzartefakte der Menschheit sowie zahlreiche Wildpferdknochen aus der Altsteinzeit hinterlassen. Die Spuren belegen, dass der Urmensch Homo erectus über hohe technische Fertigkeiten verfügte, systematisch Großwildjagd betrieb und wohl auch ein komplexes Sozialgefüge besaß. Die Autoren, namhafte Wissenschaftler verschiedener Fachrichtungen aus dem In- und Ausland, geben in diesem Begleitband zur Niedersächsischen Landesausstellung erstmals zusammenfassend Einblick in die bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse.
