An impressionistic biography of Ernest Hemingway centred around the writer's house in Cuba

Featuring documentary footage of Hemingway's Cuban home and photographs of the writer as a young man. Select scenes summarise the history of the early 20th century; "Le Voyage dans la Lune" by Georges Méliès, a zeppelin, the Russian Revolution and WWI. The film includes audio of Gertrude Stein reading her poem about Picasso, and photographs of key figures from the time (James Joyce, Louis Armstrong, Al Capone, Mussolini), followed by narration about his time in Paris. Footage from "The Spanish Earth", a propaganda film written by Hemingway during the Spanish Civil War, is included. In an audio interview, the director, Joris Ivens, discusses Hemingway's political opinions
