Series Statement: Applying psychology in the schools
Content: "Most practitioners, regardless of their professional orientation, are familiar with disorders like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Down syndrome, and other more frequently encountered health-related chronic conditions. Over 20 years ago, the first edition of this book was published, supplying vital empirical information about medical conditions that had been previously unavailable and providing practical information about how to support these students not only medically but also educationally and social-emotionally. This second edition focuses on disorders with less widespread research and information yet with a prevalence of at least one in 25,000 individuals. With the updated organization and research, the second edition may prove helpful for psychologists, medical professionals, educational professionals, and others involved in behavioral health, as well as university training programs. School psychologists and other mental health professionals in the schools are in a unique position to take the lead in orchestrating and coordinating school-based services for students. These professionals have knowledge of special education law as well as training and skills in consultation and collaboration among school-based professionals and parents. Although medical professionals have expertise in addressing medical issues, mental health professionals like school psychologists understand the complex nature of cognitive, academic, and psychosocial factors of children with health-related conditions. The second edition is intended to provide a synergy of scientific underpinnings and practical research-based suggestions. In order to accommodate the number of disorders, chapter content is targeted and specific to the goals of this text: to inform users of the most up-to-date information on symptoms, outcomes, and potential interventions."--(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

Series Statement: Applying psychology in the schools book series
Content: "This book discusses how to improve students' mental and physical well-being by implementing various mind-body interventions in schools. Following a three-tiered service delivery model, it provides guidelines for applying these practices universally, with small groups, and with individuals. Chapters review the benefits, limitations, and potential risks associated specific mind-body practices, including yoga, mindfulness, biofeedback, and expressive therapy. They also address how to target specific problems, such as eating and sleep disorders, chronic pain, and trauma"--
Content: "This book provides an overview of the current state of various mind–body interventions, as well as other practical considerations for the use of these techniques in the school setting, to address the growing influence of stressors on school-aged children. The primary target audience for the book is school psychologists; however, other mental health professionals who work in or outside the school setting, such as counselors and social workers, are also likely to benefit from the content. The book is divided into three sections. The first section focuses on broad considerations for delivering mind–body health interventions in schools. The reader can find such topics as home–school collaboration, treatment integrity, school-based health services, the impact of chronic illness from a neurodevelopmental perspective, self-care for school psychologists and related professionals, an overview of traditional Eastern mind–body approaches with consideration for use in the Western school setting, and a critical, yet important, discussion of best practice recommendations for the use of mind–body interventions in the school setting. The second section covers multiple mind–body health interventions for various school-related issues including academic, behavioral, and socioemotional concerns. The third section of the book discusses the application of mind–body interventions with specific populations of students. The readers will find chapters that focus on specific populations of students for whom the use of various mind–body approaches might be beneficial. The book holds a substantial amount of knowledge that can be easily shared with young people to help them help themselves as they encounter challenges throughout their development."--Preface. Series Statement: SAGE research methods. Cases
Content: This case study provides information on conducting a single-subject, multiple-baseline design for people who experience both asthma and anxiety. These two conditions are often comorbid, and the symptoms of each condition can work against those of the other. In this case, we will discuss a completed, published study that successfully implemented a yoga intervention with school-aged children, as well as an ongoing study that is using guided meditations with adults. Both groups of participants had documented asthma and anxiety, and both cases utilized multiple-baseline design.
