Es waren einmal 2 kleine Straßenhunde, ganz allein auf der Welt, bis jeder durch Zufall ein Zuhause findet. Schmuddel, dreckig und voller Flöhe, gewinnt das Herz des Mädchens Anna, die in ärmlichen Verhältnissen lebt. Sam dagegen wird dem Kaiser zum Geburtstag geschenkt und wächst als ganz besonderer Gruckelhund (Sie erinnern sich vielleicht: das sind Hunde, den Wolpertinger ähnlich, die Gruckel jagen ...) im Palast auf. Wiederum durch einen haarsträubenden Zufall werden beide vertauscht - der Hundesnob Sam wird plötzlich mit rauen Sitten konfrontiert, während das taffe Proletariertier Schmuddel die Benimmregeln im Palast ganz und gar nicht akzeptieren will ... Der unfreiwillige Rollentausch führt zu spannenden und turbulenten Szenen, die von den Hunden jeweils köstlich kommentiert werden. Die abgedrehte, märchenhafte Geschichte erzählt die Autorin (zuletzt BA 5/01) mit viel Fantasie und Humor. Die witzigen Zeichnungen von P. Waechter unterstreichen den Erzählton auf's Feinste - insgesamt ein toller (Vor-)Lesespaß, der neben der Verwechslungsgeschichte von S. Ludwig (BA 12/03) breit empfohlen wird.. - Der kleine Hund Schmuddel wächst in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf, während Sam als ganz besonderer Gruckelhund des Kaisers im Palast groß wird.
