Der jüdische Autor Rachmil Bryks erzählt über das Leben, das Überleben und das Sterben im Lodzer Ghetto und im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz. Mit seiner außergewöhnlichen Erzählweise überträgt er die Ausweglosigkeit des Ghetto-Alltags, den schmerzenden Hunger und die ständige Angst in schriftliche Form – nicht ohne mit feinem Witz dem Grauen immer wieder zu trotzen. Wer eine Katze – eine wichtige Mausefalle – fängt, bekommt im Lodzer Ghetto einen Laib Brot. Brot ist unbezahlbar und überlebenswichtig, da ansonsten nur mit Kraut- und Rettichblättern gekocht wird. Ebenso essentiell ist Holz, das mit allen Mitteln beschafft wird: die Rückwand des Schrankes, der Fußboden, das Dach, alles, was entbehrlich ist, wird verheizt, um Essen zu kochen und die Kälte zu bekämpfen. Das Leben im Ghetto ist durch Arbeit, Hunger und Angst bestimmt – Gefühle, die in den fünf Erzählungen ebenso berührend ehrlich wie überwältigend geschildert werden und dabei tief ergreifen.
