In "A Labyrinth Of Time" schildern Experten wie Daniel Barenboim, Charles Rosen und Pierre Boulez ihre Vision von Carters Musik. Der Film zeichnet die musikalische Entwicklung des Komponisten nach. New York City wird dabei zu einer Metapher, die Carters Musik als eine Reflexion der demokratischen Gesellschaft verständlich werden lässt - einer Gesellschaft, in der Menschen den Spagat zwischen Kooperation und Ausgestaltung ihrer Individualität zu bewältigen haben.
