An einem Spätsommertag verstirbt die Mutter des Erzählers, die als Jüdin 1944 nach Auschwitz deportiert wurde und nach ihrer Ankunft vom berüchtigten Lagerarzt Josef Mengele wegen ihrer offensichtlichen Schönheit nicht in die Gaskammer geschickt wurde. Jahrzehnte später macht es sich der Erzähler in Paris zur Aufgabe, die Geschichte seiner Mutter Perla zu erzählen. Er beginnt zu recherchieren, was sie ihr Leben lang verschwiegen hat, versucht sich vorzustellen, welche Gedanken sie auf dem Transport ins Konzentrationslager hatte, wie ihr albtraumhafter Aufenthalt dort ausgesehen haben könnte. Dabei vermischt der Sohn die Erinnerungen mit eigenen Wertvorstellungen, mit Erlebnissen der romantischen Dichtung und Malerei. Am Ende stellt er sich die Frage, wie "die deutschen Dichter und die Hitlergeneräle den gleichen Stammbaum haben" konnten. Dieser erste ins Deutsche übersetzte Roman des Pariser Autors ist der Auftakt einer Familien-Trilogie.
