In diesem Band legt Richard J. Brunner ein Pendant zu seinem 1997 erschienenen Werk »Schmeller und die Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften« vor. Wie dort werden auch hier im Brennpunkt der Biographie eines bedeutenden Forschers des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts institutions-, wissenschafts- und landesgeschichtliche Aspekte versammelt. Obwohl Schmeller als bemerkenswerter Sonderfall in der Universitätslandschaft gelten darf, fehlte bisher eine Darstellung seiner Tätigkeit als Universitätslehrer bzw. eine Edition der einschlägigen Aktenstücke. Diese Lücke soll mit dieser Arbeit geschlossen werden. -- In den hier ausgebreiteten Materialien finden sich auch neu erschlossene, bisher nicht bekannte Details. Sie zeigen, alles in allem, nicht nur die Vielseitigkeit und Bandbreite von Schmellers wissenschaftlichem Oeuvre; sie werfen auch einen Blick auf den Menschen Schmeller, der es, schon aufgrund seiner Herkunft, mit seiner Umgebung und mit sich selber nicht immer leicht hatte.
