Als Mitte der Neunzigerjahre die 〈Neue Zürcher Kantonsgeschichte〉 erschien, wurde sogleich bemerkt: Der Aspekt der Juden war praktisch vollständig vergessen worden. Dieses Versäumnis wird nun in einem separaten Werk nachgeholt. Drei Historikerinnen haben die rund 800 Jahre dauernde Präsenz der jüdischen Bevölkerung auf Zürcher Kantonsgebiet umfassend aufgearbeitet und spannend dargestellt. Das Zusammenleben zwischen jüdischer und christlicher Bevölkerung verlief auch im Kanton Zürich höchst wechselhaft. Auf Phasen der Ausgrenzung und Vertreibung folgten in der 800 Jahre dauernden Geschichte des Zusammenlebens immer wieder auch friedliche und befruchtende Zeiten. Die 〈Geschichte der Juden im Kanton Zürich〉 gibt aufschlussreiche und auch überraschende Einblicke sowohl in den inneren Wandel der jüdischen Religionsgemeinschaft als auch in die Bedeutung der Juden für das politische, wirtschaftliche, kulturelle und soziale Geschehen
