Content: Nietzsche's thinking is unparalleled in its contradictory effects and it continues to be relevant. Even today, opinions on him diverge strongly. Through the 20th century, philosophies, art movements and political ideologies have oscillated between euphoria and condemnation, affirmation and an ignoring silence. Incorrect and abusive readings in fascist and Stalinist circles perverted his ideas and utopias. After 1945, historically and critically informed approaches in philosophy, the arts and the media provided initiallycautious insights into the diversity of the interpretations of his thinking; this field of activity intensified towards the end of the century. In the main currents of philosophy, ethics and esthetics and in the modern and postmodern theories of art, Nietzsche's thinking has provided major impulses. Scientific and sociological interest in his provocative theories shows that his thinking continues to indicate possible paths forward. Literary and musical adaptations, his significance for visual artists from expressionism to the New Objectivity, his influence on the designs of modern architecture: from the perspective of current international Nietzsche research, all these factors provide a comprehensive overview of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century.

Content: Wittgenstein beansprucht für sich eine neue Betrachtungsweise: Er will seinen "Standpunkt weit draußen einnehmen" und philosophische Probleme mit ethnologischem Blick sehen. Ist seine scharfe Auseinandersetzung mit James Frazers anthropologischem Hauptwerk, The Golden Bough. A Study in Magic and Religion, eine frühe Einübung in diese "ethnologische Betrachtungsweise"? Sprache und Kultur geht dieser Frage nach. Kulturdifferenz und -wandel, die im Tractatus noch gleichsam unter der Schwelle philosophischer Aufmerksamkeit liegen, rücken hier allmählich in den Mittelpunkt. Wittgensteins breite kulturphilosophische Beschäftigung gilt Ethnologen wie Frazer und Malinowski, aber auch so unterschiedlichen Gestalten wie etwa Spengler, Sraffa, Renan, Ogden und Richards, Paul Ernst, Goethe und vielen anderen. Diese bisher umfassendste Studie zum Thema berücksichtigt Wittgensteins Gesamtnachlass und unveröffentlichtes Material: Ohne die problematischen Aspekte zu übersehen, zeigt sie, dass Wittgensteins Denken nicht nur sprachphilosophisch relevant ist, sondern auch und gerade kulturphilosophische Horizonte eröffnet.

Content: Wittgenstein wanted to adopt "a far-distant point of view" and look at philosophical problems from an ethnological perspective. Was his sharp confrontation with James Frazer's principal work, The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion, an exercise in such an "ethnological point of view?" In this study, Brusotti shows that Wittgenstein's thinking opened up new dimensions in language and cultural philosophy.

Content: Nietzsche says "good Europeans" must not only cultivate a "supra-national" view, but also "supra-European" perspective to transcend their European biases and see beyond the horizon of Western culture. The volume takes up such conceptual frontier crossings and syntheses. Emphasizing Nietzsche's genealogy of European culture and his reflections upon the constitution of Europe in the broadest sense, its essays examine peoples and nations, values and arts, knowledge and religion. Nietzsche's apprehensions about the crises of nihilism and decadence and their implications for Europe's (and humankind’s) future are investigated in this context. Concerning the crossing of notional frontiers, contributors examine Nietzsche’s hoped-for dismantling of Europe’s state borders, the overcoming of national prejudices and rivalries, and the propagation of a revitalizing "supra-European" perspective on the continent, its culture(s) and future. They also illuminate lines of syntheses, notably the syncretism of the ancient Greeks and its possible example for the European culture to-be.
