Die klassische EDV ist einem grundlegenden Wandel unterworfen: Sie wird Bestandteil einer größeren Integration, in die zusätzlich die CAx-Technologien (CAD, CAM,...), das Personal Computing und die Kommunikationstechnik einbezogen werden. Im Zuge dieser großen Integration wandeln sich die herkömmlichen monolithischen Groß-Systeme zu strukturierten verteilten Systemen unterschiedlicher Herkunft und verschiedenartigster Eigenschaften. Neue Anwendungen tauchen auf, die mit den vorhandenen systemtechnischen Lösungen nicht mehr zu bewältigen sind. Die Bereitschaft zur Veränderung und Innovation ist nahezu überall vorhanden. Doch viele Fragen sind derzeit noch weitgehend ungeklärt: Welche Systemarchitekturen sind die richtigen für die Zukunft? Welche Rolle, wenn überhaupt, werden künftig die vorhandenen Mainframes spielen? Ist "Client-Server-Architektur" das Lösungswort für alle Probleme? Ist Internetworking praktikabel? Welche Standards setzen sich durch? Sind die offenen Systeme nicht nur eine neue, vergängliche Modeerscheinung? Sind sie wirtschaftlich vertretbar? Besteht die Chance zu einer Migration, oder bedeuten offene Systeme einen Neuanfang? Im Umfeld offener Systeme herrschen viele Mißverständnisse, Vorurteile und Denkblockaden, aber auch Enthusiasmus, der sachlich nicht immer gerechtfertigt ist.
