Der „Philister“ ist eine bedeutende Sozialfigur der deutschen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte - und eine zu wenig beachtete. Im Schlagschatten des Bildungs- und Universitätsdiskurses artikuliert diese Figur viele jener Spannungen, die die Neuzeit kulturell prägen. Der Band holt das semantische Phänomen aus dem Schatten heraus und bereichert mit einem literatur- und kulturhistorischen Überblick die kulturwissenschaftliche Forschung. Denn „Philister“ ist ein Begriff, der sich nicht nur im Alten Testament findet, sondern auch im Schnittpunkt von Antisemitismus und Nationalbewegung im 19. Jahrhundert; er tritt in - und seit - Goethes „Leiden des jungen Werthers“ als Gegenbegriff zum Genie auf, und sein semantisches Potential lässt sich über 1968 bis in die gegenwärtige Literatur- und Kunstproduktion verfolgen: von Nietzsche über Heine bis zu Schlingensief.
