Es geht um den zweiten und letzten Aufenthalt von Franz Liszt (1811-1886)in Luxemburg (nach dem von 1845); 1886, zwei Wochen vor seinem Tod in Bayreuth. Zwischen Liszt und dem ungarischen Maler Mihály von Munkácsy war im Jahr 1882 in Budapest eine freundschaftliche Beziehung entstanden. Munkácsy war verheiratet mit Cécile Papier, der Witwe eines belgischen Barons, die Gesang studiert hatte und früher öffentlich aufgetreten war. Der Adelstitel wurde dem ehemaligen Schreiner Michael Lieb - der sich nach seinem Geburtsort Munkács Munkácsy nannte - vom österreichischen Kaiser Franz-Joseph im Jahr 1880 verliehen, nachdem Munkácsy sich als Maler einen weithin bekannten Namen gemacht hatte. Wie Liszt in einem Brief schrieb - Liszt hat in seinem Leben rund 6.000 Briefe geschrieben -, hatte Munkácsy durch seine Berufung zum Maler einige Hungerjahre durchzustehen. 00
