Series Statement: Routledge studies in world Englishes
Content: "Combining the World Englishes framework with First Language Acquisition methodology, this book investigates children's acquisition of L1 English in the context of multilingual Singapore, one of the traditional Kachruvian Outer Circle or ESL countries. The book investigates language choice, use, and dominance in Singaporean families, identifies common linguistic characteristics of L1 Singapore English, as well as the acquisitional route that Singaporean children take. It discusses characteristics at the different levels of language organization, i.e. phonological, morphosyntactic, lexical, and pragmatic features, drawing on a variety of systematically elicited data and Praat-based acoustic analyses. Comparing the results to similar data obtained from children living in England (both mono- and bi-/multilingual), the book also sheds light on how the acquisitional steps taken by Singaporean children differ from or are similar to traditional native speakers of English and children from immigrant families in England"--

Content: This book offers a broad selection of statistical applications to everyday situations, illustrating how exciting and diverse statistical analysis can be. It covers a wide variety of topics, including offering hearing-impaired people the option to enjoy music, extracting meaningful quantitative data from texts, and modeling flood disasters to help get a better grip on them. Most of the examples are not typically found in textbooks but directly relate to real-life problems encountered by the “average person”, including topics relevant for sustainable development. Technical jargon and formalism have been avoided as much as possible, and a detailed statistical background is not assumed of the reader, making the book accessible to anyone interested in current research in statistical applications. Providing an unobscured look at a thoroughly fascinating science, it will help students to develop enthusiasm for statistical issues and methods, and may even inspire ideas for their ownprojects.

Content: Presents a new way to categorize Englishes around the globeBrings together a range of distinguished researchers in the field of World Englishes to evaluate the Extra- and Intra-Territorial Forces (EIF) ModelJointly examines postcolonial and non-postcolonial varieties of English which have so far been treated separatelyPresents case studies analysing a range of varieties of English within the World Englishes paradigmThis book brings together two types of varieties of English that have so far been treated separately: postcolonial and non-postcolonial Englishes. It examines these varieties of English against the backdrop of current World Englishes theory, with a special focus on the extra- and Intra-Territorial Forces (EIF) Model. Bringing together a range of distinguished researchers in the field, each chapter tests the validity of this new model, analyses a different variety of English and assesses it in relation to current models of World Englishes. In doing so, the book ends the long-standing conceptual gap between postcolonial and non-postcolonial Englishes and integrates these in a unified framework of World Englishes. Case studies examine English(es) in England, Namibia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Australia, North America, the Bahamans, Trinidad, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, Bermuda, and the Falkland Islands, Ireland, Gibraltar and Ghana.

Content: By facilitating the contact between smaller groups of people living in widely separated places, the new media stimulate the use of minority languages, including constructed and historical languages. This article looks at the international community of users of Old English as a living language on the Internet. It analyses the linguistic competence behind the modest Anglo-Saxon revival and the strategies applied to deal with the modern world. As a sample of online texts, especially from Wikipedia, shows, not only does neo-Old English suffer from haphazard grammar and pervasive interference from Modern English, but it also depends too essentially on lexical innovation to have much of a future.

Content: Explores the growth of Englishes in a range of multilingual contexts Cutting edge case studies draw on spoken data from Uganda, Zanzibar, South Africa, Bahrain, China, Bangladesh, Germany, Italy and the UK Focuses on the speakers and the uses of English at the grassroots Examines ethical aspects of pursuing research involving vulnerable communities includes an introduction by Christiane Meierkord and Edgar W. Schneider which defines and delineates the topic, contextualizes it in existing research and theory and discusses its sociolinguistic implications English as a second and foreign language is increasingly used at the grassroots level, by individuals coming from disadvantaged backgrounds with often little or no access to formal education, in business and in contexts outside of international organisations, education and academia. Bringing together an international range of contributors, this book explores face-to-face uses of English in a range of grassroots multilingual contexts. Divided into three parts, the book explores the spread of English in former areas of British domination including Africa and the East, in trade and work migration, and in forced migration by refugees. The chapters present cutting edge case studies which draw on spoken data from Uganda, South Africa, Bahrain, China, Bangladesh, Germany, Italy and the UK. In doing so the book presents an empirical basis for the further study and modelling of world Englishes. It examines the scope for integrating Englishes at the grassroots into existing models of English and explores relations between notions of hybrid languages, translanguaging, polylanguaging and world Englishes.
