Johan van der Keuken, who made this film in Amsterdam in 1967, compresses into 31 minutes the life and times of the expatriate tenor sax giant (1909-73). In addition to poignant moments of Webster playing 'My Romance' and other standards, this odd montage shows him playing along with a Fats Waller record, talking to his Dutch landlady ('She's like a second mother to me.'), reminiscing about Duke Ellington's band ('You never get it out of your system.'), shooting pool, and visiting the zoo. Here is a masterful example of filmmaking that truly penetrates the heart of this big, sad, lonely bachelor. (Jazz loft)
Content:
A medium-length documentary portrait of American saxophonist Ben Webster, a brilliant talent for whom Amsterdam became a second home at the end of the 1960s. Webster, a living legend of jazz and blues, was born in Kansas City in 1909; during the 1930s he played alongside truly great musicians, and also featured in Duke Ellington̷s band. Through Keuken̷s eyes he is seen as a contradictory figure, emanating both violence and refinement, broad-mindedness and suffering. Director Johan van der Keuken has succeeded in transferring to the film reel a bond uniting a musical genius and his music, looking deep inside the persona of an artist who died six years later.
