When someone who inexplicably looks just like Harper contacts her via Instagram, she learns that she has three half siblings: Dario, Simone, and Wyatt, all conceived from the same sperm donor as Harper. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: July 1, 2022 A girl and her newly found half siblings embark on a journey to find their sperm donor. Seventeen-year-old Harper lives under pressure to academically achieve, continuously engage her Instagram followers, and think about her future, all of which worsens her anxiety--which is already at an all-time high because of the pandemic. She has always wondered about her anonymous sperm donor father and how his DNA may influence her. A chance online comment leads her to half sibling Dario, and, as they become closer, they connect with two others who share half their DNA: Simone and Wyatt. The four eventually find their biological father, and they embark on a summer trip of self-discovery. Harper, who is nursing a broken heart after a breakup, is both excited and terrified about what will become of her after this experience. This gorgeous coming-of-age novel thoughtfully examines questions of identity, family, kindness, and a longing for connection. Framed by Harper's narrative voice, presented in what is often a whirlwind of nonstop thoughts, the story also deftly and empathetically engages head-on with anxiety. Each chapter begins with excerpts from 19th-century letters and journal entries whose relevance becomes clear as the novel progresses, adding an extra, significant layer to an already rich narrative. Most characters are White,Simone has a dark-skinned Israeli and French mother, and the cast is diverse in sexual orientation. An epic tale of life, love, and identity. " Rezension(4): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from August 1, 2022Gr 8 Up- In the midst of the pandemic, Harper Proulx's life revolves around her boyfriend Ezra, what ifs, photo filters, and the calm reassurance she receives from likes and comments on Instagram. One day she gets a comment: you look just like my friend, Dario. This isn't the first time it's happened. She keeps a journal filled with notes on these people and what she knows about MF-her Maybe Father. She reaches out to Dario, who, like her has auburn hair and blue eyes, and the two meet up. They exchange notes and he tells her about the others. Up until this point she's only used social media to appear as though she's taking risks, but an unexpected break up with Ezra leads her to start taking real ones. Stepping outside of her comfort zone and into a world of unanswered questions, Harper goes on a trip with Dario and some of her half-siblings to Maui where her biological, sperm-donor father is apparently living. Through this novel about overcoming fear and expectations, Caletti examines what makes a person-is it their DNA, their lived experiences, or the family who raised them? She takes a critical look at the role and impact of technology and social media on the mental health of teens and shows what can be gained by stepping away and being present. Harper's relatable thoughts and anxieties mirror that of many teens before and during the pandemic, with and without similar family structures. VERDICT Reminiscent of Natasha Friend's The Other F-Word and Robin Benway's Far From the Tree . Highly recommended.- Alicia KalanCopyright 2022 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(5): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 1, 2022 Grades 9-12 *Starred Review* Printz Honor Book winner Caletti (A Heart in a Body in the World, 2018) introduces readers to only-child Harper, the product of a sperm donation. Riddled with anxiety that's grown worse since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Harper finds a sense of control as a social media influencer. But her life is thrown into chaos when, through a boy named Dario, she discovers a link to the man who made her mother's pregnancy possible. As she comes to discover that she has dozens of siblings, Harper and some of her newfound family embark on a journey to Hawai'i to meet the man who helped create them. Each chapter, introduced by a journal entry or letter by real-life nineteenth-century ship commander Mary Ann Brown Patten, brings Harper closer to finding her courage in this heartwarming and authentic story that's packed with a collage of well-researched detail, people, and themes that heighten the book's realism. Alongside Harper's coming-of-age story, the book offers a refreshing turn on the romantic subplot and a complex mother-daughter relationship. The only thing notably missing is acknowledgment of the real-world impacts caused by tourism, colonialism, and other forces that the Indigenous people of Hawai'i have brought to light (often through social media). Otherwise, this will find itself right at home in collections with strong contemporary YA alongside serious but uplifting realistic novels in the vein of those by Maureen Johnson and Katie Cotugno. " Rezension(6): "〈a href=https://www.hbook.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/thehornbook_logo.png alt =The Horn Book border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 1, 2022 Without knowing the identity of the man who was her sperm donor, seventeen-year-old Harper feels that half of her is a blank. Then she meets Dario, her half-brother, and learns that there are forty-two half-siblings...and that they've located the man himself. So Harper, Dario, and two other half-siblings travel to Hawaii to meet Beau Zane, where, to Harper's relief, Beau and his mother welcome them. Beau teaches them how to dive, his passion, which quickly becomes Harper's passion, too, and when their beloved diving spot is threatened, Harper and her new family feel compelled to try to preserve it. Caletti (One Great Lie, rev. 9/21) captures our collective anxieties (the story is set in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic) as well as the constant intrusion of electronic devices, especially the numbing, manufactured perfection of social-media squares. The natural world is offered as the antidote: when Harper sees a jellyfish on her first dive, she is so there, so present in this profound moment, that if you reminded her again that she once felt empty, she'd hardly believe it. The summer is full of similar moments of wonder, in which Harper feels connected to Beau, her newfound siblings, history, and every living thing -- including herself. A rich, contemplative story about looking beneath the (literal and figurative) surface to find love, purpose, and joy. Rachel L. Kerns (Copyright 2022 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. When high school junior Ivy learns that she’s pregnant, she knows she wants to get an abortion, but the procedure is illegal after six weeks in Texas. With her mother’s support, Ivy and her steadfast boyfriend Lorenzo prepare to road-trip to Oregon, where her grandmother lives, for the operation. Before she leaves, however, a classmate discovers her secret, and soon, the whole community knows of Ivy’s plan. Lorenzo decides to make the trip an around-the-world adventure, planning stops in cities such as Rome, Tex.,Lima, Okla.,and Moscow, Kan., to visit friends and relatives along the way. Through them, Ivy learns about other people’s experiences with abortion. The cruelty that Ivy is subjected to by her community is sometimes difficult to read, but her surety of her right to choose never wavers. Through Ivy’s frank first-person narration, Caletti offers a matter-of-fact exploration of abortion and its use cases, interweaving myriad perspectives on pregnancy and body agency with a deft and nonjudgmental approach. Main characters read as white. Ages 14–up." Stronger than the accent are the emotions Marie projects as a teen who's become pregnant in a town of megachurches. Ivy's shame and distress at unjust accusations are balanced by the wry humor peppered throughout the story. Marie presents Lorenzo, Ivy's steadying boyfriend, with a gravelly voice that makes him seem more solid as the two travel to Oregon for a legal abortion. En route, the pair see extraordinary sites and meet four women who counter the repressive texts and calls coming from Texas. The narration and writing give good dimension to the characters in a story that offers perspectives on women's choices, illustrating rather than preaching. S.W. AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine"

Sixteen-year-old Ivy lives in Paris, Texas, an insular town with a fake Eiffel Tower and a culture of megachurches. She proudly works as an assistant manager at Euwing's Drugs, she's also a diligent student with plans for college who one day hopes to see the world. But when she gets pregnant, Ivy knows it could spell the end of her ambitions. People in her town are vitriolically antiabortion--and abortion in Texas is illegal after six weeks. She tells her boyfriend, Lorenzo, and he and Ivy's mother organize a plan to drive to Oregon, where Ivy's indomitable grandmother lives, to get an abortion. What ensues is both a poignant road trip through towns named after world cities so Ivy can, after a fashion, experience seeing the world and a searing reflection on the contrasting states of affairs around abortion access and community attitudes. Over the course of the trio's journey, Ivy learns of other people's abortion stories--and that one in four women gets one. This extraordinary story scrutinizes, through Ivy's first-person, present-tense narrative, some of the historical and contemporary efforts to control women and the ways women have either been accessories to or have rebelled against them. The book offers a powerful argument for choice, bolstered by an exploration of women's oppression and strength, told through a personal lens: It's an individual story through which many readers will find universal commonalities. Ages 14–up." Rezension(4): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: October 1, 2023 Grades 10-12 *Starred Review* Caletti (The Epic Story of Every Living Thing, 2022) dives into the evergreen zeitgeist of reproductive rights through Ivy's story in Plan A. After teen Texas resident Ivy finds herself pregnant by unexpected means, she heads out on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, Lorenzo. While she has her mother's support, Ivy knows not everyone will be happy with her choice, like Lorenzo's father. But as she travels, she increasingly learns that it is her choice and she is far from alone in the long history of people seeking abortions. Plan A nails several elements, from the true-to-life and engaging voice to the tight handle on the nuance in the people who hold contrasting opinions and even the seemingly contradictory but simultaneously simple and complex issues of all varieties involved in abortion rights. Meanwhile, Caletti deftly manages a tender love story at the hurricane's center. Narrator Ivy maintains mystery around the specifics of her pregnancy for much of the book, building tension and a deeper level of investment in Ivy in a story that could happen to anyone. Characters throughout are dynamically painted with detail, as well as Ivy's sharp observations. Readers who enjoyed Juniper's independence and the take on a timely medical issue in Marisa Reichardt's A Shot at Normal (2021) will also appreciate Plan A. She is Assistant Manager of Euwing's Drugs, gets good grades, knows where she will go to college, and has money saved up so one day she can leave her tiny town of Paris, TX. But she also has a problem. She is exactly six weeks and one day pregnant-and abortions after six weeks are illegal in Texas. After talking with her mom, they decide that Ivy and her boyfriend, Lorenzo, will go on a road trip to visit Ivy's family in Oregon, where she will be able to get an abortion. The trip is messy and complicated-they get on each other's nerves,Lorenzo's dad tracks them down and tries to stop them. As they travel across the country and stay with relatives and family friends, women start opening up to Ivy about their own experiences with abortion. While Ivy never wavers in her certainty that an abortion is the right choice for her, the community that is created through the sharing of stories helps illustrate just how common abortion is (and always has been). Whenever a plot point strains credulity, Caletti cleverly breaks the fourth wall to address it head-on. But what really makes this story shine are the main characters. They are relatable and multifaceted, and the ways in which they love and support one another other feels deep and meaningful. Characters default to white, though the race of Lorenzo, who has the surname Bastimentos (Bastimentos is an island in Panama), is not clear. VERDICT An accessible, powerful portrayal of the importance of choice. A must-read.- Katie PattersonCopyright 2023 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "
