Series Statement: Routledge studies in federalism and decentralization
Content: "Defensive Federalism presents an original contribution to the field of federalism and multinational democracies, exploring the concept of defensive federalism as a protection of self-government against the "tyranny of the majority". The empirical evidence on federal and regional polities often shows critical imbalances in the territorial division of powers beyond what has been formally established in the constitutional rules. This volume highlights the rights, institutions, decision-making processes, and procedural rules that can protect and develop the practical political, economic, and cultural powers of federated and regional entities, especially those linked to territorial national minorities. The authors focus on federalism as a safeguard of self-rule, as well as a set of institutional and procedural rules to avoid the territorial dimension of the "tyranny of the majority". They answer two fundamental questions: How is it possible to design new stable and fairer federal agreements between national minorities and majorities where there is no single ideal solution? Is there a need for a new kind of "defensive federal model" for approaching national pluralism in liberal democracies? This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of federalism, national diversity, and democracy, as well as policymakers and practitioners in both public and private institutions"--

    Series Statement: GeoGuide,
Content: This book provides a synthesis of the physiography and geodynamics of the entire Pyrenean orogen and its foreland basins, providing the "big picture" (structure of the orogen and chronology of its formation, overview of its post-orogenic evolution, and Quaternary and recent landscape history). One part of the book proposes a 6-7 day itinerary across the eastern and east-central Pyrenees, two areas that currently provide the richest, best-documented, and most carefully curated database on the post-orogenic evolution of the mountain belt. The book deals with three complementary topics: (i) geodynamics, i.e. the long-term post-orogenic evolution of the Pyrenees since the declining stages of tectonic collision ca. 30 million years ago, and within the wider reference frame of Iberia, the Western Mediterranean, and the Atlantic margin; (ii) geomorphological processes and landforms that have conspired to shape the eastern part of the French and Spanish Pyrenees in response to base-level and climate-related changes over than same time period; (iii) geoheritage, i.e. educational vignettes of the flagship landscape units and typical geological sections of the study area. Written as a field guide, it is designed to help readers to construct discovery-based itineraries through the region (with options and variants depending on time and physical ability), allowing them to appreciate the key landscape and geoheritage features over the course of 1 week, with potential for much more. This GeoGuide is primarily aimed at confirmed geoscientists from most disciplines in Earth science, at postgraduate students engaged in field studies, and at curiosity-driven, educated amateurs keen to enhance their understanding of spectacular or enigmatic features encountered on their travels.
Note: 1. Crustal architecture of the Pyrenees -- 2. Basin analysis: the sedimentary record of orogenic growth and decay -- 3. Cenozoic transformations of the mountain range: evidence from denudation chronology and landforms -- 4. Present-day environments -- 5. Synthesis and overview.

Content: The internal Betic Mountain ranges of the Almería region form the oriental extremity of beticorifain orogenic belt, a young chain of the Mediterranean alpine domain. A major paradox characterizes the betic internal landscapes. At first sight the internal zones present the stigmas of active tectonics and spectacular erosive phenomena. The Betic chains form real mountainous walls cut by canyon valleys and summits are more than 2000 m high. On the other hand, the sommitale parts offer unexpected landscapes: much dulled topographies, vast plans hardly cut by small valleys and dominated by residual reliefs. The study of this region allows to contribute to the debates on the concept of insensibility in geomorphology because the Betic internal chains reveal durability in the landscapes of forms unsuitable for the recent climatic and tectonic frame. A multidisciplinary approach allows to interpret these high planation surfaces as quite young landform, and permits to understand how they have developped and persist in the mountainous landscape though an active orogenic regime. The recent contributions of geodynamics, the crossed contributions of the thermochronology low-temperature, the analysis of the correlative deposits, morphometry and the use of the MNT permit to explain a plausible scenario of evolution of these mountains. We shall demonstrate by means of all these tools that messinian planations have truncated the Betic buildings and that the current mountainous volume is only a recent experience lower than 5 My
