Talk about a dark side. Tom Jackman is the only living descendant of Dr. Henry Jekyll and̶if you recall your Robert Louis Stevenson̶his alter ego: the evil, conscienceless Mr. Hyde. Or so we're slow to learn̶or misled into believing, maybe̶as this 2007 BBC-aired miniseries unravels over the course of six one-hour episodes. James Nesbitt so totally transforms himself̶sans CGI or heavy-duty makeup̶from the mild-mannered Jackman to the wicked and vicious "Hyde" for the latter's rampages (involving sex, violence, and alcohol) that he practically steals the show. Fortunately, there's plenty else to enjoy here, including the underlying menace of the mysterious secret organization that's trailing Jackman/Hyde for its own nefarious purposes. Is Jekyll a big metaphor for the ennui of modern man, beset on all sides by the demands of family and career and wanting to escape? Or is it just an excuse for some sly horror comedy from a writer-creator̶Stephen Moffat, Hugo-winning scriptwriter for Doctor Who̶who wants to offer a contemporary riff on classic Victorian literature (you try finding your car when your evil dark side won't tell you where he left it)? In either case, this half-disturbing, half-goofy series is a hoot. DVD extras include two audio commentaries and a pair of "making-of" featurettes. Recommended. (M. Johanson) (Video Librarian)
