Goldoni condusse una vita intensa, sebbene confrontata con quella di due giganti del secolo. La vena letteraria non fu inferiore a quella di Voltaire, mentre l'ispirazione amorosa eguagliò quella di Casanova, benché meno varia nelle tipologie femminili, prediligendo Goldoni soprattutto subrettine, colombine e servette amorose. Ma non fu solo un fugace colpo d'occhio femminile quello che fece sposare Goldoni al teatro. Bensì fu una passione così forte da essere al limite dell'insania. Solo questa passione gli consentì nel 1750 di comporre 16 commedie e solo questo amore per l'arte comica gli dette l'energia per riformare il teatro sottraendo il comico al lazzo e all'osceno. Trasformando gli acrobati in veri attori. Luogo comune è che la riforma abbia abolito le maschere, ma non è vero perché Goldoni con Arlecchino ha vissuto almeno quanto con la moglie Nicoletta.
