    Uniform Title: The matrimaniac
Content: December 16, 1916 was the release date of "The Matrimaniac", starring Douglas Fairbanks and Constance Talmadge. This is one of the most physical, action-packed Fairbanks comedies, the whole picture essentially one long white-knuckle chase. Fairbanks and Talmadge are on their way to elope, with the girl’s father and a rival for her hand in hot pursuit. Doug manages to put his girl on a train, but misses it himself when he goes to get the minister. So then it’s a race to catch up to the train in various conveyances before the father and boyfriend can reach the girl. Later the sheriff comes into it - and Fairbanks’ acrobatic heroics are truly breath-taking. To stop the rival from stealing his bride, he leaps between buildings, hops over a six foot man, climbs on electrical wire, scales the side of a house, jumps from a cliff onto a tree ... needless to say in the end, he achieves his objective. Uniform Title: The Mack Sennett collection - Vol. one
Content: Now, for the first time, thanks to Flicker Alley, CineMuseum, and Keystone Films, over 100 of the best surviving Sennett comedies have been gathered from around the world, fully restored, and digitally re-mastered in HD for Blu-ray home video. "The Mack Sennett Collection, Vol. One" features the first 50 of these films presented on a 3-disc Blu-ray set. The Keystone Film Company, under the guidance of pioneering producer and director Mack Sennett, was the birthplace of classic American slapstick comedy. This historic studio was at one time home to a staggering number of silent screen luminaries including Mabel Normand, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Harold Lloyd, Gloria Swanson, Wallace Beery, Harry Langdon, Marie Dressler, Ben Turpin, The Keystone Cops, Ford Sterling, Charley Chase, Al St. John, Mack Swain, Edgar Kennedy, Billy Bevan, Louise Fazenda, Eddie Quillan, and countless others. Even Hollywood icon Charlie Chaplin, still the world's most recognized actor, introduced his beloved Tramp character under the auspices of Keystone. Later, under the Mack Sennett Comedies banner, Sennett went on to produce a new generation of sound comedies, some in early color, featuring the likes of W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby, Lloyd Hamilton, Andy Clyde, and more. [www.flickeralley.com]

Series Statement: Douglas Fairbanks: A Modern Musketeer 4
    Uniform Title: The mollycoddle
Content: After finishing his first costumer swashbuckler "The Mark of Zorro", Douglas Fairbanks Sr. reverted to his standard formula with the contemporary action comedy "The Mollycoddle". Doug plays the title character, a dandified American who returns to his home in the Wild West after being educated in England. Suspected of being little more than a pantywaist, Doug proves his grit by capturing notorious desperado Wallace Beery. Fairbanks and Tom Geraghty co-adapted "The Mollycoddle" from a short story by Harold McGrath. He followed this picture with another modern comedy, "The Nut", then devoted the rest of the 1920s to such period pictures as "Robin Hood", "The Thief of Baghdad" and "The Gaucho". Series Statement: Douglas Fairbanks: A Modern Musketeer 5
    Uniform Title: The nut
Content: Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. was making the transition from modern romantic stories to adventures when "The Nut" was made - The Mark of Zorro was the picture before this one, and The Three Musketeers would come after. He doesn't do as many of his famous stunts here, either - he suffered a serious injury while jumping out a window in one scene and production had to be halted while he healed. This no doubt forced him to slow down, and at some point between this picture and the mid-1920s he secretly began using a double for some stunts (actor/stuntman Richard Talmadge was the man used). The title character that Fairbanks plays is Charlie Jackson, a Greenwich Village character who invents Rube Goldberg-style contraptions. He uses them to please his friends and his sweetheart, Estrell Wynn but more often than not, they backfire. Estrell, who lives in his apartment building, wants to benefit slum children by having them entertained with the help of New York's biggest society names. This gives Jackson a new project to undertake; to get publicity he steals a load of wax statues from a show and is pursued by cub reporter Pernelius Vanderbrook. A gambler who lusts after Estrell tricks her into coming to his apartment. Jackson saves her from being compromised and helps her escape by taking her through the furnace pipes of the building. Featured in the story is a lawn party where Fairbanks is imitating a number of famous figures, one of them being comedian Charles Chaplin. This was actually the real Chaplin (a good pal of Fairbanks') parodying himself. Supposedly, Chaplin did all the other imitations, too. [www.rottentomatoes.com]

Content: Factory girls Fanny Hawthorn and Mary Hollins decide to take their vacation at Blackpool ̶ Britain's version of Coney Island. There, Fanny meets Allan, the wealthy son of factory owner Nathaniel Jeffcote. The two impetuously ditch Mary to spend some time alone. When her family discovers what happened, they confront Nathaniel, who forces his son to propose marriage to the girl. Fanny's decision shocks everyone. In filming the popular stage play, director Maurice Elvey decided to provide a complete back-story. In doing so, he liberated the film from the conventions of the theater. The location scenes with Fanny and Mary are incredible. Using the actual mills in Lancashire gives the film an astonishing documentary realism, while the moving camera flying in and around Blackpool's famed rides like the plunging Big-Dipper and Helter-Skelter, and climbing the heights of the Tower is as good as any in the history of cinema. When Stanley Houghton's play opened in 1912, a near riot broke out in London. Famed anarchist Emma Goldman proclaimed it as one of the most important advancements in liberating women from society's sexual double standards. Even today, Fanny's final decision ̶ a choice that ripped apart the conventional morals of Edwardian society ̶ astonishes audiences with its pure courage. For many, Hindle Wakes is England's equivalent to Ibsen's The Doll's House. (Covertext)
