Erica Tietze-Conrat wurde am 22. Juni 1883 in Wien geboren. Die Familie gehörte dem assimilierten jüdischen Bürgertum an. 1905 promovierte Erica Conrat als erste Kunsthistorikerin an der Wiener Universität und heiratete im selben Jahr ihren Fachkollegen Hans Tietze (1880–1954), noch heute vor allem bekannt wegen der von ihm nach dem Ende der Monarchie durchgeführten Museumsneuorganisation. Die frühen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen erhellen die beruflichen Möglichkeiten und das Agieren einer jungen Kunstgelehrten mit eigenen künstlerischen Aspirationen im Kunstgeschehen Wiens während der 1920er-Jahre. Man kann beobachten, wie sich Erica Tietze-Conrat auf ihrem Weg trotz bestehender gesellschaftlicher Einschränkungen eigenständig entwickelte. Nach Hans Tietzes Rücktritt aus dem Staatsdienst begab sich das Ehepaar auf eine mehrmonatige Spanienreise wobei sie auch innerlich Abstand von ihren Hoffnungen nahmen, in Österreich im Sinne einer humanistischen Modernisierung noch etwas bewirken zu können. Zur Zeit des Anschlusses Österreichs an Nazi-Deutschland forschten Tietzes in den großen Museen und Sammlungen Europas. Schließlich gelang ihnen die Flucht in die USA, wo Tietze-Conrat, ihrer großen Gelehrsamkeit entsprechend, eine Dozentur an der Columbia-University erhielt. Sie starb 1958 in New York.
