der Deutschen Forschungsgesellschaft für Bodenmechanik. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist im wesentlichen die Übersetzung eines Berichtes, den Dr. A. Casagrande bereits im Juni 1931 dem United States Bureau of Public Roads vorgelegt hat. Der Bericht enthielt die ausführliche Auswertung von Untersuchungen über die Anwendung des Araometers (dort auch Hydrometer genannt) für die Schlammanalyse von Boden. Diese sehr gründlichen Untersuchungen führte Casagrande in den Jahren 1927-1930 im Dienste des Bureau of Public Roads aus. Die Vorteile der Araometeranalyse im Vergleich mit anderen Methoden der Schlammanalyse sind: 1. Einfachheit des Versuchsvorganges und der Auswertung der Beobachtungsergebnisse, wobei keine besondere Erfahrung erforderlich ist, 2. die geringen Anschaffungskosten der sehr einfachen Versuchsgeräte, und 3. die große Ersparnis an Arbeitszeit im Vergleich mit allen anderen Methoden. Infolge davon kam die Araometeranalyse rasch zu weit verbreiteter Anwendung in den Vereinigten Staaten und beginnt sich auch in den Erdbaulaboratorien Europas schnell einzubürgern
