Le célèbre retable des frères Hubert et Jan Van Eyck, achevé en 1432 est conservé aujourd'hui à l'église Saint Bavon de Gand pour lequel il a été conçu. L'ouvrage présente cet ensemble majeur en offrant une analyse de sa signification comme de son style avec de très larges illustrations. Il cherche également à montrer ce que furent les prémices de cet art et son développment par Jan, le cadet des deux artistes. Il présente aussi la vie et les productions des deux frères, contient des annexes réunissant les documents sur lesquels s'est appuyée la recherche et un catalogue des oeuvres qui expose les différentes hyppothèses qu'elles on pu suggérer et leurs caractères matériels. C'est la première étude d'ensemble depuis les publications de James Weale (1908) et Ludwig Baldass (1952) qui apporte de nombreuses nouvelles données par des analyses méthodiques des documents et des oeuvres
