Wer ist ein guter Staatsbürger? – Über die Suche nach dem idealen Verhältnis von Staat und Bürger in der Literatur zwischen der Französischen und der Deutschen Revolution. Das Buch widmet sich der Figur des guten Staatsbürgers und der guten Staatsbürgerin in der deutschsprachigen Literatur von 1789 bis 1848. In diesem Zeitraum gehen Philosophen, Juristen, Ökonomen, Politiker sowie Publizistinnen und Publizisten der Frage nach, wer ein guter Staatsbürger und eine gute Staatsbürgerin ist, welche Tugenden, Fertigkeiten, Kenntnisse, Überzeugungen und Emotionen er und sie besitzen und wie die Bevölkerung zu guten Staatsbürgern erzogen werden kann. Der gute Staatsbürger verkörpert in ihren Augen ein harmonisches Verhältnis zum Staat, das in der Wirklichkeit allerdings nicht existiert. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden ausgewählte literarische Texte von Schiller, Goethe, Novalis, Kleist, Büchner, Aston und Heine als Gedankenexperimente analysiert, in denen die in der Öffentlichkeit diskutierten politisch-ethischen Ideale auf die Probe gestellt und staatliche wie zivilgesellschaftliche Alternativen zu ihnen entwickelt werden. Die literarischen Versuchsanordnungen offenbaren dabei, wie viel ein Mensch mitunter opfern muss, um ein guter Staatsbürger oder eine gute Staatsbürgerin zu werden.
