Der französische Filmemacher Claude Lanzmann legte Mitte der 80er Jahre mit SHOAH eine der radikalsten und umfassendsten Filmarbeiten über die Vernichtung des europäischen Judentums im Nationalsozialismus vor. 12 Jahre Dreharbeiten und Recherche, 350 Stunden Material, 9 1/2 Stunden Film gegen das Vergessen. Dabei verzichtet dieses epische Großprojekt auf Musik, auf jegliche Form des Kommentars und vor auf historisches Archivmaterial. Im Mittelpunkt stehen nicht die Dokumente der Vergangenheit, sondern die Gegenwärtigkeit des Erinnerns. Lanzmann besuchte die Orte der Vernichtung, die Todesfabriken Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Auschwitz und fand Orte vor, über die Gras gewachsen war. Daher die Insistenz, mit der er in Polen, in Israel, in den USA, in Deutschland letzte Augenzeugen der Katastrophe seltene Überlebende der »Sonderkommandos«, Zuschauer und auch NS-Täter ausfindig machte und zu Deportation und Lageralltag befragte.(Covertext)
