Der in Taiwan lebende Illustrator und Autor Chih-Yuan Chen (zuletzt "Gui-Gui das kleine Entodil") schickt die kleine Hsiao-Yü in einer taiwanesischen Stadt zum Einkaufen. Aus der Kinderperspektive wird aus dem alltäglichen Ereignis ein 2-sprachiges Abenteuer. Wahrscheinlich können nur wenige die chinesischen Schriftzeichen entziffern, dafür aber über das kunstvolle Aussehen dieses Systems staunen. Der Übersetzer Johannes Fiederling liefert in seinem Nachwort Hilfestellungen für die Betrachtung, erzählt als Kenner von Typischem, das uns entgehen würde. Chen hat für den Ausflug monochrome Grau- und Brauntöne gewählt, in denen ab und zu ein Farbfleck - eine blaue Murmel, der rote Deckel eines Bonbonglases - aufblitzt. Er verwendet reduzierte geometrische Formen für die Innen- und Aussenräume, in denen sich Hsiao-Yü bewegt. Zurückgenommen ist auch der aus kurzen Sätzen bestehende Text. Das Erstaunlichste ist, dass das Buch nie trist wirkt, sondern der originelle Erfindungsreichtum des Mädchens die Seiten mit Bewegung, Lachen, Witz und Wärme füllt.
