Cherniss berichtet über im Abstand von 10 Jahren durchgeführte empirische Untersuchungen zum Problem des beruflichen Ausbrennens von Menschen in Helferberufen. Danach ist Burnout nicht an eine bestimmte Persönlichkeitsstruktur gebunden, wie W. Schmidbauer diagnostiziert (vgl. BA 1/78, 7/92, 2/93). Burnout-Effekte sind vielmehr eine Mischung aus arbeitsplatzspezifischen und lebensphasentypischen Gegebenheiten, die durch eine Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen, der Einstellungen gegenüber Klienten, Patienten und Schülern sowie durch Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen und Institutionen vermieden werden können. - Ergänzend zu allgemeiner gehaltenen Ratgebern (vgl. zuletzt U.
