Mort en 1795, à l'âge de 10 ans, dans la prison du Temple, Louis XVII n'a jamais vraiment régné sur la France. Si la destinée tragique du fils de Louis XVI et de Marie Antoinette continue d'échauffer l'imagination des mateurs de mystères historiques, elle a surtout inspiré de très nombreux artistes en France et dans le reste du monde entre la fin du XVIIIème et le début du XXème siècle. Aux premières représentations royalistes, qui tentent d'occulter les conditions de détention du jeune prince, succèdent les portraits doloristes de l'enfant martyr, victime expiatoire de la folie politique des adultes.0Tout en restant un sujet privilégié de l'iconographie contre-révolutionnaire, le sujet inspire de nombreux peintres romantiques attirés avant tout par la dimension spectaculaire de ce huis-clos carcéral. Dans toute l'Europe, des artistes peignent, gravent et sculptent la captivité de Louis XVII, érigée ne archétype pictural de l'innocence corrompue. Les débats qui accompagnent l'exposition contrariée du Capet lève-toi ! ( 1835) d'Emile Mascré, pièce maîtresse de cette production, témoignent de la puissance évocatrice de cette scène, que d'aucuns continuent de juger traumatisante.00Exhibition: Domaine de Vizille, France (29.06.-01.10.2018)
