Kreatives Schreiben wird vom Dichten durch die Gabe der Inspiration, die Fähigkeit, aus sich heraus innere Bilder hervorzubringen, abgegrenzt, oder nach Benn durch den «schöpferischen Keim». Der Dichter ist sein eigener Impulsempfänger. Beim Kreativen Schreiben will die Verfasserin durch Impulse von außen diesem Vorgang möglichst nahe kommen. Die Arbeit klärt zunächst theoretisch die Begrifflichkeit und den Forschungsgegenstand. In einem zweiten Teil wird die Theorie auf die Praxis angewendet, d. h. der kreative Prozess wird auf das Kreative Schreiben angewendet, um daraus die Bedingungen und Konsequenzen für das Kreative Schreiben in einer Schreibwerkstatt abzuleiten. Schließlich werden die Ergebnisse langjähriger Praxis vorgeführt, in der die Autorin mit verschiedenen Schreibgruppen die selbst aufgestellten Methoden mit den beschriebenen Impulsen und den kreativitätsfördernden Bedingungen umgesetzt hat. Es wird exemplarisch gezeigt, wie der Weg vom Impuls zum Gedicht aussehen kann, in welchen Arbeitsphasen ein Gedicht entsteht, welche Bearbeitungsstufen es geben kann. Damit nähert sich die Arbeit von der Praxis her der Frage, ob das kreative Schreiben bzw. das literarische Schreiben lehr- und lernbar sei.
