... die großartige und längst überfällige Neuveröffentlichung der Genreperle Das Syndikat / La polizia ringrazia von Steno alias Stefano Vanzina. Sehnsüchtig erwartet wurde der Film in Fankreisen bislang vor allem deshalb, weil er als einer der besten Film des Subgenres der italienischen "poliziottesci" gilt und zugleich als Urvater dieses in den frühen 1970ern überaus beliebten Genres. Italien in den frühen 1970ern: Beinahe hilflos steht die Polizei einer Welle von Gewalt und Verbrechen gegenüber, die Rom und die anderen italienischen Großstädte überrollt. Anstatt die Flut einzudämmen, liefert man sich lieber Straßenschlachten mit Gewerkschaftern oder lässt die Knüppel auf die Schädel aufmüpfiger Studenten niedersausen Ń so zumindest sieht es die Presse. Und umgekehrt fühlt sich die Polizei von den Politikern und der Justiz zu wenig unterstützt und von den Öffentlichkeit verkannt. Die Umwälzungen der späten 1960er liegen ebenso in der Luft wie konservative Bestrebungen, den Status quo mühsam aufrecht zu erhalten. In diesem explosiven Klima soll der Leiter des römischen Mordkommissariats Mario Bertone (Enrico Maria Salerno) einen brutalen Raubüberfall mit zwei Toten aufklären. Und als sei das nicht schon schwierig genug, treibt zudem eine geheimnisvolle Gruppe ihr Unwesen, die die Straßen der Stadt von Verbrechern, aber auch Huren, Homosexuellen und Gewerkschaftlern säubert und die exekutierten Leichname vor Plakaten deponiert, die zur Sauberhaltung Roms auffordern. Zwar findet Bertone heraus, dass das Killerkommando von illustren Kreisen der Gesellschaft (einschließlich des Vatikan) unterstützt wird und dass die Taten darauf abzielen, einen rechtsgerichteten Staatsstreich vorzubereiten, doch Glauben schenkt ihm niemand. Und so ist sein Kampf ein einsamer und überaus gefährlicher... (Joachim Kurz, Kino-Zeit)
