Auf den ersten Blick scheint das 19. Jahrhundert - unsere Darstellung beginnt mit Sade und endet mit Nietzsche - wenig Christliches an sich zu haben. Ein beträchtlicher Teil der Personen, denen wir begegnen, ist nicht gläubig. Der Gott des Grenadiers Coignet heißt Napoleon und jener von Bettina von Arnim nennt sich Goethe. Was Flora Tritan angeht, so hält sie sich selbst für eine Art Messias, und Louise Michel wird die "Rote Jungfrau" getauft. Es ist eine unruhige Zeit. Die Revolution hat die Geister ebenso wie die Institutionen durcheinandergeschüttelt. Die katholische Kirche, die sich auf ihre unnachgiebigen Positionen zurückgezogen hat, verurteilt in Bausch und Bogen alle Ausdrucksformen von Freiheit. Der Wirtschaftsliberalismus erzeugt eine brutal ungleiche Gesellschaft, die nicht nur in den Augen von Marx durch Klassenkämpfe geprägt ist. Nichtsdestoweniger inspiriert das Evangelium auch weiterhin zahlreiche Frauen und Männer, die aus ihm Kraft schöpfen in ihrem Kampf für die Unabhängigkeit ihrer Länder, für die Befreiung ihrer Brüder und Schwestern und für "eine Vertiefung der Existenz", wie es Kierkegaard formuliert hat. Bevorzugt werden wenig be-kannte Gestalten auftreten: der Bolivianer Vargas, die Lyonerin Pauline Jaricot oder Pauline Roland und Marthe Lebouteiller aus der Normandie, Eugène Casalis aus den Pyrenäen, Pastor in Südafrika, und die unbekannten Autoren der Negro spirituals. Was Berühmtheiten wie Lamennais, den Pfarrer von Ars, Bernadette Soubirous, Kardinal Newman, Dostojewskij und Van Gogh anbetrifft, so wird man sie sicher mit Vergnügen von einer unbekannten Seite kennenlernen.
